Chris Banic has been fascinated with martial arts since he was very young; however, he did not start training until he wrestled in high school for the 1999-2000 season. When his school discontinued the wrestling team, he sought training elsewhere and started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing at Warrior Martial Arts in Newmarket in 2001.
Chris then moved to downtown Toronto to go to school. Living in Toronto Chris trained in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Rebellion in 2002-2003. Although Chris prefers to compete in and train for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he spent 2003-2007 wrestling for the University of Toronto because it offered the opportunity to compete for the school, more competitions were available and it gave him the chance to improve his takedown abilities.
During the summers between wrestling seasons Chris maintained some Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training at Karma BJJ in 2004 and Cobra Kai BJJ in Las Vegas in 2005.
